Here's what you need to know this flu season, and how to protect yourself and your family.

What Is Influenza (Flu)?

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause symptoms ranging from mild fatigue and cough to severe complications, especially in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions.

TIPS

1. Get Vaccinated – It’s Your Best Protection

  • Annual flu vaccination is the most effective way to reduce your risk.
  • It’s recommended for everyone over 6 months of age.
  • Available through GPs, pharmacies, and some workplaces.
  • It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide full protection.

2. Hygiene Still Matters

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitiser when out and about.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

3. Know When to Stay Home

If you’re experiencing symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue or chills

Stay home, rest, and avoid contact with others to prevent spreading the virus.

4. When to Seek Medical Advice

  • If symptoms worsen or don’t improve after 48–72 hours
  • If you're at higher risk of complications
  • If you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion

Visit your GP or, for urgent concerns, attend the GCPH Emergency Care Centre open 24/7.

Community Tip

Encourage your colleagues, friends, and family members to get vaccinated. Protecting yourself also helps protect those around you.
